Grilled Cheese Month: Classic Grilled Cheese with Cayenne and Green Peppercorn Gouda

Sylvan Star Cheese makes a return appearance in this final, only-slightly-late entry to Grilled Cheese Month.  This time I opted for simple, straightforward, bare-bones grilled cheese relying instead on the cheese itself for a twist.
The other Sylvan Star cheese I purchased was a Cayenne and Green Peppercorn gouda (review coming soon) and I thought it deserved to be showcased alone in the sandwich since it already had added spice.

I used our "griddler" again to grill the sandwiches on whatever bread we had handy (some sort of whole grain something or other) and this time I think I got better results. I might've left them on a touch too long as you can see some dark spots. That may also have been the result of incomplete butter coverage.

Hot off the grill
The cheese melted nicely, again I maybe should've shredded it first to have it melt more evenly and a little faster but ultimately this cheese delivered great gouda flavour along with a nice kick of spice from the cayenne pepper and green peppercorns embedded within. Mrs. ISMOTU didn't taste as much spice as I did but I found the cheese much hotter when I tasted it prior to making the sandwiches, so maybe I was just searching for it more. Also she was just eating lunch whereas I was mentally composing a blog post as well as eating lunch.  A bit of ketchup completed the classic grilled cheese experience and we enjoyed a great lunch.
Delicious gooey innards! (plus pickle pals!)
I'm really happy with the way this set of sandwiches turned out and I think I'm closer to perfecting my grilled cheese skills.  This was a fun experiment in blogging and I'm sure I'll do another series of themed posts in the future. Stay Cheesy Internet Denizens!

  1. I think that a lateral view would have better conveyed the sense of gooey innards. Not bad, but it's not the 90's anymore and the internet is a demanding bitch goddess.

    1. As I've mentioned before, photography isn't really my jam but you have a good point. A cross sectional pic might've been better. The dream of the 90's is alive in Portland..
